IDB cites Voxiva as a practical example of ICT bridging the 'digital divide' in Latin America
Washington DC, 12 June 2006 - At the "Building Opportunity for the Majority" conference in
Washington DC, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) published its booklet of the same
name, in which it cites Voxiva’s Alerta DISAMAR Disease Surveillance solution in Peru as
evidence of the progress Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is making in Latin
America. The publication devotes a full chapter to "Connecting the Majority: Empowerment
through Digital Dividends" which focuses on the development of ICT for the base of the pyramid
in Latin America and the Caribbean, concluding that while much progress is being made the ICT
revolution poses as many challenges as it does solutions for developing countries trying to bridge
the digital divide. However, practical solutions such as those offered by Voxiva, which uses
existing communications infrastructure such as fixed or mobile telephones to access its platform,
are an example where technology is being extended to those who, for socioeconomic
and geographical reasons, have previously had limited or no access to them.
